China's coke industry will implement new emission standards
On the 20th, Pei Xiaofei, spokesperson for the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, introduced that the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the State Administration for Market Regulation jointly issued the "Emission Standard for Air Pollutants from Coke Chemical Industry", replacing the original standard. It is expected that after the implementation of the new standard, the particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds emitted by the coke industry can be reduced by 50%, 40%, 70%, and 50%, respectively.
At the press conference held by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on the same day, Pei Xiaofei said that the coke industry is a key area for air pollution control. China is the world's largest coke producer, with a national coke output of 490 million tons in 2023, accounting for more than 70% of the world's total output. This standard revision further meets the current industry's production practices and environmental management needs, improves the industry's comprehensive governance level, and promotes the high-quality development of the industry.
Pei Xiaofei introduced that the new standard focuses on the industry's key issues and problems that urgently need to be solved. It mainly revises four aspects: control of organized emissions, control of unorganized emissions, control of bypass and emergency emission outlets, and monitoring and compliance determination.
It is reported that the new standard will be implemented on April 1, 2025. At the same time, existing enterprises will be given a two-year transition period, and it will be implemented on January 1, 2027, giving enterprises sufficient time for upgrading and transformation.
Pei Xiaofei also stated that at present, there are mature and feasible technologies for each limit value and measure requirement of the standard, and the amount of engineering transformation for most enterprises after the revision is not large.
